How to Write an Address on a Courier in India (with Examples)

A parcel is only as good as the address on it. A clear, complete and correctly formatted address is the single biggest factor in whether your courier arrives on time — or comes back to you days later marked “undeliverable.” This guide shows you exactly how to write an address on a courier cover in India, for both domestic and international shipments, with examples you can copy.
The anatomy of a correct address
Whatever the destination, a deliverable address answers four questions in order: who is it for, where exactly do they live, which city and area, and how can the courier reach them. Write it top to bottom, most specific to least specific:
- Recipient’s full name (as they are known at that address)
- Flat / door / house number and building or apartment name
- Street name and a nearby landmark
- Area / locality
- City, district and state
- PIN code (or ZIP / postal code abroad)
- A working mobile number — this is essential
Example: a domestic Indian address
For a parcel within India, write it like this:
- Mr. Arun Kumar
- Flat 3B, Lakshmi Apartments
- 2nd Street, Nehru Colony (near Nanganallur Bus Stand)
- Nanganallur, Chennai – 600061
- Tamil Nadu, India
- Mobile: +91 98XXX XXXXX
Example: an international address
For an overseas courier, the rules are similar with two important additions: write the country name in capital letters on the last line, and use the destination country’s postal-code format. For the United States:
- Mr. Arun Kumar
- 2200 Oak Street, Apt 14
- Jersey City, NJ 07304
- UNITED STATES
- Phone: +1 201 XXX XXXX
The PIN / ZIP code is non-negotiable
Modern sorting is driven by the postal code. A missing or wrong PIN code is the most common reason a parcel is delayed or misrouted, because automated systems sort on the code first and the written area second. Double-check the six-digit Indian PIN or the destination’s ZIP/postcode before you ship — a single wrong digit can send your parcel to the wrong city.
Always include a phone number
For door-to-door courier and international delivery, a reachable mobile number is as important as the street address. Couriers call ahead to confirm the recipient is in, to navigate apartment complexes, and to arrange re-delivery if the first attempt fails. Include the recipient’s number — and ideally an alternate — in the international dialling format with the country code.
Small habits that prevent big delays
- Write in clear block capitals or print the label. Neat, legible text reduces sorting errors.
- Add a landmark for Indian addresses — “opposite the temple,” “near the bus stand” — it genuinely helps the last-mile rider.
- Include a return (sender) address on the parcel, so it can come back to you if it can’t be delivered.
- Avoid unusual abbreviations. Spell out the area and city in full.
- Protect the label. Cover it with clear tape so rain or handling can’t smudge the ink.
